Summer Slam is an annual event designed to engage young people that forge outcomes inclusive of promoting health and wellness and community cohesion through a competitive basketball tournament that involves organized program teams from various mid-Atlantic communities. Hosted and the Kappa Community Development Foundation, Inc. in partnership with the College Park Sandy Spring Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.® and the Pearl Foundation, Inc. in partnership with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®, Iota Lambda Omega Chapter, Howard County MD government, the basketball tournament also provides a platform for youth to practice teamwork, discipline and community involvement. The core Program Elements are:

  • Basketball Tournament: Open to boys & girls teams ages 9 to 17 years old (3rd through 11th Grade)
  • Awards: Recognizing competition, leadership, teamwork, and fair play.
  • Health & Wellness Workshops: Sessions on fitness, nutrition, and mental health, in partnership with local healthcare providers.
  • Community Engagement: Family-oriented activities, food trucks, and local vendor displays.
